Shri Madhavendra Puri was a Great Vaishnava Sanyasi who resided in Vrindavan during the 14th century, a contemporary of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He was considered as the greatest devotee of Shri Krishna during his times. He was always immersed in the Holy name.
One day when Shri Madhavendra Puri was immersed in devotion near Govardhan ,without even caring to eat,a little cowherd boy brought him a pot of milk to drink and said he would come to collect it later which he never did.Later in a dream,Shri Madhavendra Puri recognized the same boy as Lord Krishna who instructed him in the dream to excavate his hidden deity near Govardhan hill which was kept hidden for long by a pujari who wanted to protect it from invading muslim rulers .Shri Madhavendra Puri along with some villagers excavated the area and rediscovered the beautiful black idol of Shrinathji, which is presently being worshipped in Nathdwara,Udaipur,Rajasthan to this day.
The Lord also is said to have instructed Shri Madhavendra Puri to apply cool sandalwood paste on Shrinathji’s idol as he was hidden for long in the hot sand. So,Shri Madhavendra Puri embarked on a journey to Jagannath Puri for the sandal wood paste.
There is also an interesting story of Kshira Chora Gopal ,who stole a pot of sweet rice for his favourite devotee, the temple now located in Remuna,Balasore, Orissa.
The recent conclusion of Chandan Yatra ( smearing of the lord with chandan) in all ISKCON temples was a blessing to all devotees who witnessed it and took part in it.
