And now  finally the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens bill 2007 has been passed.This bill says that if  parents are abandoned by their children and relatives who inherit their property,they will be jailed for 3 months .It is a welcome news…. but how far will this be successful is the question.

.There should also be a means for the public or the elders themselves to immediately report ill treatment.There should definitely be a helpline number so that the senior citizens can reach out for help.

I was appalled when I saw an elderly women being mistreated by her son and daughter in law.

She was forced to live in a shack outside the huge mansion that she once owned.

The most shocking thing however was that a rusty bucket with stale food was being dropped with the help of a rope from the first floor of the mansion by her daughter in law for the lady to eat.

The food was stinking and full of ants that were consuming it!! This was the most inhuman thing I have ever seen.The neighbours sympathized with her and did what they could and finally she is now safe living with her daughter…

There are so many more untold stories of pain and disregard in our society..

 Isn’t it a shame that our culture that was once known for respecting elders has degenerated to this level??

 Government should be forced to make a law to ‘threaten’ children of the dire consequences of not taking care of their own parents??

Children should realize that they will never be forever young and they will also become a senior citizen one day..

Parents protect children..now government protects parents from children..what shame!!!
